Are you looking for an opportunity to shape the future of science, technology and innovation?

Do you want to help develop an essential platform for exchange and networking among all stakeholders in science and research in Europe?

If so, then EuroScience provides a great opportunity! EuroScience is seeking passionate and motivated pro bono candidates for its Governing Board.

Who are we?

EuroScience is the European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology, an international, membership-based non-profit organisation. The mission of EuroScience is to promote a scientific community that creates positive change for society through open dialogue between science and the wider society, promoting a fair, open and healthy research culture and fostering excellence in science and research integrity. The flagship action of EuroScience is the biennial EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe’s largest general science conference, dedicated to furthering dialogue on science and scientific practice, presenting cutting-edge research advances and examining the impact of science on society.

Who are we looking for?

To be representative of Europe, the members of the EuroScience Governing Board should be diverse in age, experience, skills, gender, geography, cultural context and perspectives. They should be willing to devote time and expertise to the organisation, show team spirit, share their broad networks, and respect the values, perspectives and actions of others. One key factor for the success of EuroScience is that its Governing Board be a working body. All candidates for Governing Board election must currently be full members of EuroScience (or become full members at the time of their application for candidacy)[1].

We are looking for members who are especially interested in the following topics:

  • Impact of science on society and dialogue on science in, with and for society across disciplines and sectors. For example, through science policy, science for policy, research-based innovation, science communication or science journalism, as well as research cultures, scientific integrity and other issues.
  • Membership and strategy development – understanding key views, values, attitudes and actions for potential members-to-be and attracting new members by triggering their interest and engagement.
  • Governance and understanding of how an association operates, and how a board works with the staff to maximise impact, income generation and performance.
  • Communication – proficiency in communicating with various target groups.

Key responsibilities of EuroScience Governing Board members:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the organisation and actively contribute with professional expertise to support the work of the organisation.
  • Promote EuroScience’s growth, develop policies and maintain its relevance to the scientific community.
  • Ensure the organisation’s financial stability.
  • Review and contribute to annual operating plans and delegate management authority to and monitor the work of the Secretary General.
  • Participate in board meetings, board committees, task forces and working groups, based on expertise and needs.
  • Cultivate relationships with corporate and community partners.
  • Act in the best interest of and be an ambassador for EuroScience towards its members and the scientific community at large, including stakeholders and policy makers.

Time commitment:

  •  The time commitment is approximately 6 – 10 hours per month.
  •  Governing Board Members are expected to serve one 4-year term.
  • The Board meets normally 4 to 6 times per year, mostly online outside regular working hours, but at least once per year in a physical meeting.
  • Each Governing Board Member should contribute to at least one committee, task force or working group.

How to apply to become a candidate for election to the EuroScience Governing Board:

Please submit by 13 March 2022 your personal CV and a cover letter expressing your motivation to board.election@euroscience.org.

The cover letter should explain why you are interested in becoming a Governing Board member of EuroScience and how your expertise will help the organisation to achieve its goals.

The Governing Board position is non-remunerated but EuroScience covers travel and accommodation expenses for physical meetings.  All meetings and communications are in English.

Election procedure:

Application documents from all eligible candidates will be distributed to all full members of EuroScience, who will cast their votes in an electronic secret-ballot election from 1 – 30 April 2022.

The election results and the composition of the new EuroScience Governing Board will be publicly announced in May 2022. The first meeting of the new Governing Board will be held physically during ESOF 2022 from 13 – 16 July 2022 in Leiden, The Netherlands.
